Q5

Q5  what values / trait is important to succeed in career

As stated in my last post.

I think hardworking and focus / serious on what you are doing is an important trait to be successful in life. When you became very focus / serious, eventually you will be very determine reach that target.

Often some people i met are just not hardworking enough and those that is hardworking is just not focus enough. They work on all direction and end up tiring themselves up.

It makes me really happy to see people being successful at what they are doing and seeing them at such level pushes me to go harder. To go that extra mile.

I hope the stories i have shared so far would bring motivation to everybody that wanted to go that extra mile. That is not afraid of sour / bitterness. To the person that wanted to test its limit and see how far you can go.

I say this. All the obstacle / difficulties that is thrown at you. Just Bring It.

I will be part of your team that will cheer you up and fight along with you. So let's get out there and kick some ass.

december 29 2014

I have the privileged to speak with one individual, a man under the radar i would called him

A very capable man and a man of success

we spoke on a few things..

the first thing we spoke to is about target.

A man can consider himself partial success if he able to reach the target of owing bank of at least 3 million by the age of 30. That would almost equal of repaying the bank at a rate of RM 15,000 per month. which is a very commitment. That would translate; in order to pay such high commitment fee, that individual should have at least RM 20,000 of salary per month and above to survive.

This guy commitment is around RM 35,000 per month. He is probably bull shitting me but he sure look and talk the part.

wow... and i thought i was working hard enough.

That was the reason why he was part of the google team. That also show how well the whole technology or IT  industry is.

The second thing we spoke about is about trait

He said, every man is actually smart man. The only difference between a rich one and a poor one is of course family background or inheritance. Aside from that, there's only two traits that separate them both. One is very focus / serious and hardworking while the other one thought he is hardworking and focus / serious enough.

and then we spend the other times talking rubbish, building PR and just talking about the market as a whole

They say we shouldn't compete with other for the competing will never end and we only tire ourselves.

During productive hour or working hours, we compete. That's how it should be done to excel. For personal life thing, we should take it easy; that i agree.

wow

what a good motivation to kick start my 2015 after talking to him......

Q4 december 23 2014(ii)

Q4) who is the one person you look up to and how has he influence you

My ex boss Mr. Alan Teo. He told me how tough his road has been and how he never gave up. He taught me a lot about not giving up and how to be a sales person. Always up for challenge and being the kiasu Singaporean that he is and myself too, it is the challenge we gave to each other that make who we are now.

Nicholas tse. Come on, it's known how hard working he is and how serious he gets when it comes to work. There are times where his career seems to take a hit but he ever come back so strongly. A straight person who don't care about voicing his opinion. An influential person who plays a role in my life.

Simple, his inspiring quote. nothing come as simple as these quotes from Dwayne "the rock" Johnson.

It's simple. Do it.

These are the three person that i look up for whenever i felt down and it one way or another inspire me to just get going.

Q2 & Q3 December 23 2014

Q2 )what is the toughest experience / road that you had to go through in your career

perseverance is actually very important. There comes a time where i have to go through the entire year with no income and literally only have RM 5,000 in my bank account to survive for 12 months. I live on breads most of the time.

Movies, karaoke, Starbucks coffee, clubbing / bars, and even just a maggi goreng has become a luxury item to me. I live on debts. At times i don't even have enough to have my lunch for the sake of injecting fuel into the car. My breakfast are resort to a bowl of wantan mee shared between two individuals. I have to also hold on to my urge or drinking only plain water when i was out during those "yam cha" session with friends.

Every cents counts.

For that I have to work part time every weekends and holidays. When everybody is shopping or relaxing during the weekends, I am there standing at every mall or exhibitions from 10 am to 10 pm. My cheap and lousy shoe makes standing long hours a difficult task.

sure enough i was being label as cheap skate  or a cheap bastard many times. I was being criticize that my career path is a wrong move not to mention being look down upon. Many times.

That's my first year

My second is as bad. However due to strict financial control, our company begin to flourish. Allowance are given  on my second year. It's a better news but not a good one because the allowance does not even exceed RM 1,000. However due to the strict regime that i have maintain, i manage to stay afloat or should i say alive.

This time around, not only do i work part time on weekends but also on evenings from Monday to Friday which normally ends at 10.30 pm. I remember rushing to do my part time after a brief movie session with my then partner. It's always rushing and working for me. Its keep going and pushing all the time.

Due to financial constrain, i have to also do many logistic myself. Carrying heavy machines, deliver machines and also doing demos. I also end up doing many advertising and promotion material for our customers. Designing leaflet and banners, video editing and even setting up exhibition booth all by ourselves.

It was an exhausted 24 months. I'm weary and is just plain burn out.

Not knowing how to balance between love life and career then, there are times where my relationship would take a hit thus causing massive upset in my emotion state, however in regards of how terrible i felt, i need to wear a mask and soldier on while doing fake laugh the next day. This continue to the next week, the next month and so forth. Its about biting the tongue, picking myself up and just soldier on.

For a moment i tell myself how sweet sweat and tears taste, and that it's a grand substitute to water. An occasion slap to the face is needed to remind myself that i shall not give up. There is even a time i tell myself to see if i can push myself to the brink of mental breakdown.

While doing all this, i at the same time is pursuing my MBA and later on my Phd.

That's what i call a mental torture.

I survived and is now entering the 7th year of my entrepreneurship.

That 24 months is to me, the toughest road i have to go through in my career.

My experience studying abroad couldn't even prepare me for that kind of hardship but it has provide a good foundation for me so that i dont give up easily and only focus on working hard.

So every time i hear how some people are working hard to chase for their "career glory / successful career" but is at the same time spending time playing sports, drinking tea, watching weekly sport games, going to movies / karaoke or playing video / computer games. That is not even a fraction of what i consider as working hard. Just a mockery of what hard work means.

Q3) what kind of ritual do you perform every morning before work

Nowadays i just listen to great musics before i go to work.

However i must shower every morning and during every shower, its when i let the water soak. Pumping myself up telling myself that i'm the best. That i am superman, nothing in the world can touch me. Bullets shot will ricochet. Stones and arrows will not break me.Critics is after all only words and opinions of others.

I live by the quote below

"We who are truly brave will have no fear / pain, for those who try to bring fear / pain in us, i say JUST BRING IT"

why we study phd

Read below for the illustrated guide to a Ph.D.
Imagine a circle that contains all of human knowledge:
By the time you finish elementary school, you know a little:
By the time you finish high school, you know a bit more:
With a bachelor's degree, you gain a specialty:
A master's degree deepens that specialty:
Reading research papers takes you to the edge of human knowledge:
Once you're at the boundary, you focus:
You push at the boundary for a few years:
Until one day, the boundary gives way:
And, that dent you've made is called a Ph.D.:
Of course, the world looks different to you now:
So, don't forget the bigger picture:
Keep pushing.

As a Phd student, we push for the novelty in the field that we study

December 15 2014(ii)

It is picture like this, that is so motivating it makes you feel like you want to reach out for the star.

Talent is something we cannot control as its what we are born with but skill. Skill is acquire through repetition, hours of hard work, non stop going at it.

I brought my very own house a couple of months back. I consider it as a luxury home considering the size and the amount I paid for it.

Thrifty living is always the best living but a living without goal make life seems goalless.

I will own a supercar, one way or another. One day. That is my goal.

I'm no aaron kwok or any superstar, but i believe if we put our mind into something, nothing is impossible. It's not easy but it's not impossible.

For entrepreneur that is reading this, i have a few words for you.

"you can do it. In regards of what others said, stay focus and be as hardworking as you can. Go so hard that you hate your lifeless life. That is when you know, you are close on succeeding"

december 15 2014

I have mention the road i have taken to earn those values, true enough i had help and also got many assistance during my journey. There's the personal thing, love thing and many others. some of the best friends i have met during the way, memorable experience that some ladies have given me and lessons that some mentor have given me. All are very much appreciated and embedded in me.

i don't bother too much now on what i'm being labelled or how i'm being misunderstood. I believe each person have their own mind set and its up to them to think what they want to think.

For what i have achieve at my age now, i am far better off than some of my peers but at the same time i am far worst off than some of my peers too.

for all the sacrifice that i have made to be where i am now.. i can now say if i can go back time and make a choice, i would prefer to stay in KL than going overseas.

isn't it that life should be enjoyable? is having millions in bank account that important or having a big shinny car that impressive?

however i appreciated how hard my parents work to give me so i can be of what i am today..

My name is Dr. Jest wong. A graduate of BPRC, an entrepreneur and a parkour practitioner. Achievement is nothing if there's no helping hand. To that, i wanted to say thank you sincerely.

next part would be answer the remaining questions

good night all

^^

Value 6

After my studies, I finally came back to KL for good. i rarely keep in touch with my friends here in Kl, as per mention. We have grown apart. i no longer able to blend into their conversation anymore and i remain quiet every time we meet up. speaking not more than 10 words at times. The new friends i made while in KL are there for some purpose. I hated their guts for taking advantage of my sincerity.

There is during a time i start wearing masks to please other but in the end i end up at the end of all jokes. silly me.

I Found my first job when i'm back as a sales and founded my company two years later.During the tenure of my company from 2008-2014, I have endure some of the toughest workload and schedule. However due to what I have endure while I was in Canada, I’ve learn to not give up and just be hardworking while being persistent, determine and consistent.

The gruesome schedule continues with additional part time done on the side too, from working as a digi promoter to tutoring kids to taking my masters and then my Phd. I work almost 7 days a week, from 9am to 10pm sometimes that extend to 12 midnight. I travel all over Malaysia to Indonesia to Singapore and to Vietnam.

Up until today

I have sacrificed my personal life, hobbies / games, fun / travelling time, family time, health (which include my body shape) and of course my dear friends.

This is where I learn that we should be true to ourselves and not wear masks.

Value 4 & 5

January rolls in, I stop all internet chatting, movie downloading and games playing. I wake up every morning at 8am while stay back and study until 10pm every single day. It is here I met a guy from Bangladesh. He is alone too like me, so we decided to learn how to cook together, buy grocery together, learn the entire trick and of course loop holes in the university together and the most important of all, we study together 7 days a week, 14-15 hours a day for the remaining semester. During the remainder of the semester, the library became my second home. I sleep over there and have borrowed books piling up so high, it became a fortress. The only time i go back to my apartment is to eat and shower. After that, its back to school.

Of the 3 subject that I manage to still stay in course are calculus (additional mathematics) , logic reasoning (philosophy) and physics. Bear in mind that I never pass my calculus during my high school time. Not once. i did pass my physics a couple of times though.

Year end exam came and I end my semester with flying colors. I was the top scorer for both physics and calculus, scoring a perfect 100 for physics and 96 for calculus. I got my first two scholarships both from mathematics department and also physics department.

April ended. I took a biology spring course to make up for the course that I have failed. I followed the same routine. I study from morning till night non stop, true enough I score an excellent high 90. I still remember how high the marks were because I never got this high in my entire school years while i was in KL.

This is when I learn how hardworking and determination can pay off.

I leave Canada for the summer and go back to KL. I can’t wait to go back and meet with my old friends. I have not seen them for a year! I was ecstatic and filled with joy. There will be so many catching up to do and so many activities that i can do with them. I have spend the last 7 months doing nothing but study. There will be movies, soccer, and just being silly together again was my expectation.

I can't wait! but life is just cruel, we all have grown apart and we have all grown up. I find blending myself with them became an uphill battle. I can’t follow up with their stories and their lifestyle. I remain quiet most of the time i'm out with them. I hardly understand the places that they have gone. They were talking about doing the shuffle dance, they were talking about going to the beach club or whatever club, the new phones / ringtone, the what celebrity called jay chow, what road leads to which college or which restaurant, how awesome is this movie or that movie, they sing karaoke together which even though im there i can't understand a word written on the television, they began gossip about this person or that person. I don't even understand 80% of the conversation. i got slip out of their conversation much more easily this time round. No body at that moment seems to bat an eye on me.

Maybe it is due to what I have go through back in Winnipeg, my personality changes and this in turn makes it even harder for me to blend in. Probably due to the boring lifestyle I lead in Canada, Winnipeg in particular. I knew then that I have lost the bond with my best buddies. We can no longer joke and play like it uses to be. I have grown far apart from them. That our friendship bond are going up the air, just like that? sadly but true

For a moment I began to hate my parents for kicking me so far away, to make me endure this crappy life while I could be enjoying my life with my friends. I was 19 then.

July come and go, so is august, September finally came and I have leave for Canada again.

When I reached Winnipeg, I realized most of my buddies already transfer to another university including my best buddy. I’m all alone again. This cycle is finally getting into me and I tell myself, I’m never going back to KL anymore until I finish my studies here.

I began to look for work, job, experience, volunteer work during my three years there. I join churches, society and does community service work. I began to stop taking money from dad and began handle my financial myself through wages and scholarship.

This is where I learn to be very persistent, determine and consistent.

value 2 & 3

I can’t wait to go back to KL once my grade 12 was done. To just get away from all the bullying and the culture shock. I was looking forward so much to go back and be back with my buddies. Things however seems a bit difference when I went back home. Family is still the same but my friends are a bit different now. Whenever we sit down together, they beginning talking events that occur while I was not there which is perfectly normal. Life moves on and we are all growing up.

Since its only 6 months, luckily I still manage to slip myself into their topic but it is also ever so easy I got slip out of their topic and sight.
It took me two months to finally blend back in with my friends. I’m finally happy. It was like old times, the happy feeling is back. We would go to movies, play soccer, had dinners together and just hang out together. it was of great fun. However September finally came and I have no choice but to go back to Canada.

I almost cry not wanting to leave but my manly ego stop me from doing so. How silly of a man crying because of his friends. i brought this up to my family and end up got yelled at for being immature. Then there's the pressure from relatives. I didn't question much, nor do i know how to do any questioning too during that time.

I finally left KL.This time round, I’m not staying in a city like Toronto but Winnipeg, a city with only 600,000 population.  I’m not staying in a campus where food is ever so ready make but in an apartment which mean i have to cook my own food!! I was 18 then. There's no bed, no chair, no nothing. Just me and my luggage.

Due to me mixing with bad friends during my first 6 months in Toronto, my dad put restriction on my pocket money this time round. The money was so tight, it is only enough for me to buy stupid bread, rice and a month of instant noodles. I resort to food banks, churches and mosques for food. I stick around all kind of events in my university for food. I don't even care if people start calling me cheap bastard for that. I need to eat to survive. The first few months was hell to me.

This is when I learn the true meaning of survival.

Not wanting to miss out on what happen with my friends back in kl, I spend the next 4 months playing catch up with them via internet. I spend so much time playing catch up that i neglect my studies again. I realize during this 4 months too that no matter how hard to i try to play catch up, i'm still missing out because i was not there. December rolls in and our first semester examination comes with it too.

I never give it much thought for I thought I can handle it like how I handle my SPM with friends studying together. I laze around, eat out a lot and give myself excuse by not studying because “I need to adapt to the new city”

With examination around the corner and it is then that I realize nobody willing to help me out. My new friends just keep giving me answers such as i should look it up in the library instead of asking them. my request were all shot down. I gave it a last minute revision with feeling that the exam won’t be hard but how wrong and naïve I was. It was tough. Of the 5 courses (subjects) that I took, I failed 2.

I gasp

This is when I learn what consequence laziness can cause.

value 1

email was receive few days ago for me to submit answer to its question to enable me to win chui ling's speak up top 10 entrepreneur of the year award. the question is as following

1) what experiences had you gone through that build your current values and how is it important to your career

2) what is the toughest experience / road that you had to go through in your career

3) what kind of ritual do you perform every morning before work

4) who is the one person you look up to and how has he influence you

5) name two values you think is the most important to succeed in life / career

The answer i gave to them is not long however as per mention on my previous blog, since i'm answer them, i might as well do a full length here..

the answer to the first question is as following...

*******************

I was not born into a wealthy family but nor it’s a poor family but a parents that simply would do its best for its children.

There is a difference between a person’s attitude, character and also personality. This is define as of following

Attitude – opinion or method which one approaches a given situation
Character – identity / essence / traits of a man
Personality – how ones behave

That being said, a person’s character is shape on how the particular person was brought up and how strong is the family values. Attitude is shaped by ones experience while personality is shaped by the society itself.

With that being clear off my system, let us start

I would start this off by winding backward to the last year of my high school year. Here in Malaysia, we would all have our year end public examination called the SPM or also known as the sijil pernilaian Malaysia. Before the examination, I already knew months ahead that I will be heading to Canada to further my studies.

Friend at that time to me is the most important thing. We literally play and study together days and nights. Times were never hard for if I ever encounter problems in studies I would know there are friends who can help me out. I develop a carefree attitude but a happy one. Nothing seems worrying enough for me.

Exam was done and I literally spend the whole month enjoying myself with my friends, we play soccer together, travel together, eat together and also frequent the internet cafe together. The day finally came where I needed to board the plane and head to a foreign land.

First week was tough for me. I have no friends and family. For the first time in my entire 17 years of life, I learn what lonely means. I had to complete my OAC / grade 12 / pre-u there. 6 months over there, which was hell to me. I made new friends over there but it is very  unfortunate that turn out to be the the bad ones. We spend life kings, play video games all night, and learn first hand what flirting means. My time hanging out with them makes me neglect my studies and because of this, my grades suffer. I barely pass my grade 12 subjects.

Knowing I need to buckle up, I begin to distance myself from them and because of this, I was boycotted and bullied. This continue for only a few months but this few months seems like years to me. It was tough time. I had words thrown at me, food included, pebbles too. I have sand, smoke, water thrown at my door step in the middle of the night.

Here I learn to stay strong and ignore the words / remarks of my surrounding.

read a taxi story today and this suddenly remind me of a taxi story, when i use to take the cab
i used to took the cab as usual daily. The driver spent the whole driving time lamenting how times are bad for drivers, that passengers are ungrateful and fussy and the government biased and unhelpful. And all that time he has his window opened, and chain smoking with his hands and cigarette dangling outside the taxi. The taxi smelt like it hasn't been cleaned since it started operating and the engine is vibrating like it has never been serviced. Right before I got down I told him: 'brader. Kalau kita tak berusaha, jangan salahkan orang lain. Kalau betul kerja teksi tak buat duit, juallah teksi ni.. kerja lain.'
We can lament all we can about situations but fact is we can't change situations all the time, but we can change ourselves every single time. Progress, indeed, start with ourselves.

manifesto

It’s polling day today. A lot of you would have casted your votes. Both the government and opposition parties have issued manifestos with points that concern motorists, and those who keep themselves informed would have already gone through them.

There is plenty to dissect and debate on in regards to what both parties offer in their manifestos, but since this is an automotive website in order to stick to the topic, we will only comment on the matters related to motoring. Here is a gist of the motorist related points from their respective manifestos.

Barisan Nasional [BN Manifesto]

  • Revamping the National Automotive Policy to gradually reduce car prices by 20-30% and increase the competitiveness of our national cars.

  • Gradual reduction of intra-city tolls

BN’s approach is softer and more gradual. It doesn’t touch on issues like fuel price or toll, standing by their previous stance that reduction of subsidies are necessary because of inflating annual cost of the subsidy bill. There is however a mention of reduction of intra-city tolls.

These are some measures that have been already happening, albeit perhaps the feeling is that it is happening at a much slower pace than the people would like it to go. The most recent toll reduction that we reported is that of the KESAS Highway, an average drop of 20 sen.

Pakatan Rakyat [PR Manifesto]

  • Petrol and diesel prices will be lowered.

  • Lower electricity charges (relevant to motorists using EVs)

  • The gradual abolishment of tolls

  • Abolish excise duty

  • Cars priced as low as RM25,000

  • Abolishment of AES and revocation of AES summons

The Pakatan Rakyat manifesto is sure to be popular with the people. They all involve reducing taxes and increasing subsidies, which means less revenue and more expenditure for the government.

Generally, the explanation given for how these measures will be implemented without bankrupting the government’s coffers is the reduction of corruption, which will result in more budget freed up by both reducing costs incurred by the government, as well as taking back many potential revenue sources that are currently now in the hands of private individuals.

What’s with our car prices and how can they come down?
No matter who wins (we’ll find out tomorrow), both sides have promised us cheaper cars, so we’ll just assume that we’re going to get lower car prices either way. It is very common for angry motorists to compare the prices of cars in Malaysia with that of the USA and Europe. Government officials argue that import duties for cars have gradually been coming down, and there have been announcements of the reductions of import duties from various countries.

However, the difference may not be as big as perceived, as car pricing works very differently in USA and Europe compared to the ASEAN region. In the ASEAN region, we buy whatever the product planners in the car companies dish out – specs are frozen. The OTR prices of cars in USA and Europe are very much variable, as the trend is to customise the equipment in your car.

2013_Toyota_Vios_ 001

In Malaysia, the previous generation Toyota Vios – which is still on sale – goes for RM72,417 for the 1.5J and RM91,231 for the 1.5 TRD Sportivo. So that’s a difference of between 18% to 20%. So where does this 18% to 20% difference come from?

The reality is that announcements of reduced import duties have minimal effect on the prices of cars here in Malaysia. The duty contributors to the cost of cars here in Malaysia is sales tax, excise duty, and import duty. We get most of our CBU cars and CKD assembly kits from Japan, Indonesia or Thailand, and under the Malaysia-Japan FTA as well as the ASEAN FTA, import duties are already minimal.

Isuzu D-Max Artic 5

Excise duties are currently between 75% to 105% for passenger cars, 60% to 105% for MPVs, and 65% to 105% for 4X4 vehicles. Duties are calculated based on engine capacity, with the lowest band being engines with displacements below 1,800 cc and the highest band being engines with displacements above 3,000 cc. So basically, the high prices are because of excise duty.

According to Malaysian Automotive Institute CEO Madani Sahari, the average effective rate of excise duty applied to most major car brands here in Malaysia is claimed to be about 40%. This reduction of effective rate is said to be due to value added activities in the CKD process. Basically, the more of your car that you build in Malaysia, the less excise duty you pay.

Quite simply, companies basically have to take out their calculators and decide if it’s worth it incurring the additional cost of local assembly and sourcing versus the reduction of duties, and if it makes financial sense, they have the option of working on it. The Industrial Adjustment Fund that was established with the 2006 NAP review is one mechanism that allows rebates/credits to be given based on domestic content.

This is where national makes like Proton gets an advantage – despite an equally high excise duty, it gets rebates because its cars are developed locally. Supposedly, anyone who meets the fund requirements are able to get the same incentives, but it’s safe to say only companies like Proton and Perodua are that much invested in the Malaysian auto industry.

It’s still possible to work some magic here though. I was told the Nissan Almera is ‘kicking ass’ in terms of localisation and that’s how ETCM was able to price it at RM66.8k to RM78.8k, which is quite comparable to how the Vios is priced in Thailand. I can’t find a reference price point for the Almera in Thailand because it’s only available with a 1.2 litre engine there, priced between 429,000 Thai baht (RM44k) to 599,000 Thai baht (RM61k).

So in reality, while Proton’s 50% excise duty rebate was removed when NAP 2006 was announced, in a way the income lost thanks to the 50% rebate was converted into the IAF mechanism, and naturally Proton (and Perodua) qualifies since a lot of the manufacturing and R&D are done in Malaysia. In Proton’s annual reports, R&D grants received from the governemnt amounted to RM297.7 mil in 2011, RM143.7 mil in 2010 and RM80.6 mil in 2009.

Long story short, the only way for car prices to come down is to significantly reduce excise duties, and even then, it’s not a guarantee, because policies only open the path and industry players have to walk down the path opened for them. Let’s turn the clock back to 2006’s NAP announcement, which reduced duties. The government opened the path for CKD car prices to be lowered but Datuk Seri Najib Razak (then Deputy Prime Minister) said he was not happy with the extent of how much the prices had been lowered.

At that time, Toyota prices dropped by between 5.6% to 11%, Proton prices dropped by between 2% to 5%, Perodua prices were cut between RM800 to RM1,500 per car (except the baseline EX660 and EX850 models), while Mercedes-Benz CKD car prices dropped between 6.5% to 10% – for example, the E240 price dropped from RM428k to RM388k, and the C180K price was revised from RM256k to RM234k.

Perodua Axia launch

After Najib said the government was dissatisfied with the level of the price drops, further price drops were made – Proton cut prices further between 5% to 7.2%, while Perodua extended the price cuts to its baseline EX660 and EX850 models. Hyundai prices dropped between 1.42% to 10.73%, with the biggest price cut being with the Sonata, with RM13,555 slashed off its price tag. Volvo announced price cuts of up to 7%, which represented RM10k to RM20k off various models.

Nissan slashed prices up to a massive 15% – the Sentra had a 5% price reduction, while the Cefiro had a price tag reduction of about 12% to 15%. Mitsubishi reduced its Lancer 1.6’s price by RM2,000. BMW reduced prices of cars like the 320i from RM278,800 down to RM249,800, the 530i from RM472k down to RM438k, and the 530d from RM579,980 down to RM438,000.

The 2006 price drop across the board caused a furore with existing car owners as well as used car dealers. Banks were also affected as the value of the cars under hire purchase loans dropped significantly lower than the outstanding amount, putting them at higher risk if a default happened.
As you can see, automakers certainly need a little coaxing to drop the prices of cars even when the duties levied on them have been reduced. There is a matter of stock management, as well as taking care of existing customers resale value, and we all know how important resale value is to certain people.

It’s certainly not an easy thing to do, and I think if you ask anyone in the decision chair, if a price drop across the board is not imposed, they’d rather keep prices the way it is and use the new margins obtained to simply increase their coffers or make their products more competitive by increasing equipment levels.

In fact, I think that’s exactly what’s going on now, or else I wouldn’t have any other explanation for the huge disparity in equipment levels at similar price points between products from different brands in the B-segment.

There is also the matter of investor confidence. The Malaysian NAP policies are still seen to be somewhat volatile in this region, which is why investment opportunities are going to Thailand and Indonesia instead.

But it’s not to say that there hasn’t been any investment here. Honda finally set up a hybrid assembly line and have started CKD-ing the Jazz. And of course, there’s the Nissan Almera, which underwent heavy localisation under the rules set by the NAP – that localisation investment will be meaningless if tariffs are removed. I think Volkswagen still hasn’t started any significant CKD operations in this country because it is adopting a wait-and-see approach in terms of any policy changes after this elections.

There’s a lot of frying pans and fires to choose from here, and the trick for the new government, whether it is from BN or PR, is to pick the best route to take. It would certainly be very nice for new car prices to drop overnight (overnight in reality probably means in a week or two due to the recalculations needed), but I think it’s really not going to be as easy as it sounds.

Your 20s are a time to discover what the world’s really like and how you fit into it.
Transitioning from a lifestyle without significant responsibilities into the “real world” makes your 20s a decade of tough lessons.
Wherever you’re at in your 20s — whether you’re on your own or still with your parents, figuring out your career or going through grad school — you can learn from those who have already been through it.
We took at look at the Quora thread “What are the most difficult things people have to learn in their 20s” and highlighted the best answers.
Here are 20 hard lessons that everyone should learn in their 20s:

1. Your world view may be seriously flawed.

It’s natural to feel like you’ve got a solid life philosophy figured out by the time you graduate college, but you’ll likely redefine how you see relationships, politics, your career, and anything else you can think of. As Rachel Laine puts it, “[Y]ou discover everything that you thought you had all figured out was tragically wrong, laughably confused, or utterly delusional.”

2. It’s harder to get away with lies and excuses.

Maybe you made a habit of getting away with things by making up stories for your parents or professors. But lies and deceit won’t fly in your professional or personal life anymore.
“The truth has a way of rearing its ugly head, so the sooner you can come to integrity with yourself and the world at large, the sooner you’ll be able to get working towards what you really want, who you really want to be,” says Arjuna Perkins.

3. You can’t party like you used to.

Back in college you may have been able to spend a night binge drinking until two in the morning and make it to class by 11 a.m. That sort of lifestyle is incompatible with most careers. And you’ll come to find that as you progress through your 20s, your body has a harder time dealing with excess, Perkins says.
Enjoy your vices in moderation, exercise, and eat well. Your future self will thank you.

4. People will resent you if you try to always be right.

“Let go of having to be right about things — this isn’t a contest,” Perkins says. “It’s not a game. You don’t win at life. So say, ‘Thanks for your perspective. I’ll think about that,’ or, ‘I was wrong. I’m sorry.’”

5. Life is hard, and it never gets much easier.

As your responsibilities begin to pile up in your 20s, you’ll realize that just getting by — let alone becoming very successful — requires a lot of work. And there will always be failures and setbacks.
“You will fail in life, over and over and over. It won’t feel fair. Maybe for decades. You’ve got to keep moving forward. Keep going,” Perkins says.

6. Meaningful relationships are difficult to maintain.

If and when you decide to consider marriage or at least a serious romantic relationship, you’re going to realize that it requires plenty of sacrifices and work. You’ll realize the same goes for your closest friends, who will also be changing as you grow older. But these relationships are more important to your happiness and fulfillment than anything else in your life, says Rich Tatum.

7. You’re replaceable at work.

Many companies like to portray themselves as families, but at the end of the day that’s just semantics. If your company can no longer afford you or thinks it can invest more wisely in someone else, you’ll be cut from that family pretty easily.
“The company does not love you. It has no heart,” Tatum says.

8. You don’t have forever to find and pursue your passion.

The money you make from your job will mean nothing if you’re not actually enjoying life, Tatum says.

9. You’re not entitled to anything.

It’s necessary to be humble, Tatum says, especially about advantages you may have received through sheer luck. And never think that just because you put in work for things like degrees from elite universities that they guarantee you privileges in life.
Be grateful for what you have, and realize that in a single moment you can lose the things you take for granted.

10. Picking fights and holding grudges will make you miserable.

“Avoid fights. Seriously. Avoid them like a plague: Nobody wins in a fight, even if you walk away unscathed,”.
Accept apologies and apologize when you make a mistake. Don’t fill your life with negativity.

11. You must keep learning if you want to be successful.

Your education is far from over after you leave a classroom for the last time. Dedicate yourself to learning things that will help you in your career, including “the abilities to assimilate, communicate, and persuade,”Tatum says.

12. Decisions that take a few seconds to make can have long-term ramifications.

Never make a decision on an emotional impulse. “[S]tupid decisions made in the moment can rob you of years of joy and happiness,” .

13. Money is hard to earn.

When your family is supporting you, it can be difficult to grasp how much a dollar is worth, even if you are not spoiled or selfish.
As you start living on your own, however, you’ll soon realize that frivolous things you would normally not give a second thought about purchasing are not worth the hours of work equivalent to the price tag.

14. Your friend circle will likely get smaller.

As you go through your 20s, you’ll naturally start to drift away from some of your friends. Gone are the days of partying with a room full of your buddies. You will realize, though, that the friends you put the effort into staying in touch with are the ones who mean the most to you.

15. You’ll probably have a bigger role to play in your family.

Your parents may always try to nurture you as if you were a child, but they will need your emotional — and perhaps even financial — help as they get older and you become your own person.

16. Hard work isn’t always recognized.

You should accept that your boss may not always notice your contributions.
Do not let that be an excuse to become lazy, and don’t protest if someone else gets credit for your work.

17. Debt will haunt you.

A full 70% of college students graduated with debt last year, averaging $30,000 in loans. But the fact that most young professionals are living with debt doesn’t make it something you should live with for a long time. Prioritize your spending to get rid of it as quickly as you are able to.
And at some point in your 20s you’re probably going to get a credit card — use it wisely. “Realize that you will end up paying double, maybe more, for that round of drinks at the bar because you put it on credit instead of saving the cash,”.

18. There is always someone “better” than you.

“There are always going to be people who are smarter, better looking, more sociable, and just all around ‘better’ than you… To be happy, then, you have to learn to accept yourself and your shortcomings,”.
Pursue success on your own terms, not by living someone else’s life or forever living in the shadow of someone else.

19. You’ll never have it “all sorted out.”

“Remember when you thought you’d have it all sorted out by 30?”. You’ll realize how silly that is as your 30th birthday draws closer. The truth is, you’ll become wiser with age, but you’ll always question your decisions.

20. Becoming an adult is not some magical transformation.

Being an adult is more a matter of heightened expectations than any tangible change. As he bluntly puts it: “[N]o matter how good you get at playing the adult, you won’t forget that underneath it all, at any age, you are always a scared little child, with no real idea of what you are doing.”
Use this knowledge to recognize that everyone else is in the same position as you, no matter what image they project to the world. This can help you become more insightful, compassionate, and forgiving, Powell says.
